5. Crafting a thesis (20 min) - Approaches (everyone does description and one other approach):
A. Description: My topic is this like _______
AND
B. Process Analysis: My topic encompasses these processes
C. Compare/Contrast: My topic parts are the same in “X”
areas, but different in others “Y”.
D. Definition: You might think my topic is “X” but it is actually “Y”
E. Cause and effect: These things ( “X”, “Y”, “Z”have created this effect on my topic.

Example of thesis and approach:

(this is rough and will be edited) My topic is the draft, the process of drawing soldiers from a population in a time of war. This process encompasses several steps that are problematic for our nation. Drafting soldiers is just like the lottery with one big exception: only some people can play. Drafting soldiers seems like the lotto games shown on TV commercials, but it is really a high stakes sorting exercise that some deem as unfair.Social movements, political climates, and changing technology has had a big effect on the draft.
